In Case You Haven't Heard - This weekend is Salmon Run

Budd Churchward WB7FHC

The Washington State QSO party, called Salmon Run, is happening this weekend. Here is a link to the web site:

http://salmonrun.wwdxc.org/

Hams all over world we be trying to work Washington State counties and Whatcom is one that is often sought after.

Several hams from around our county will be setting up a portable station at the Blaine Marine Park and everyone is welcome to come down and join in. We plan on setting up antennas around 1000 Saturday morning.

There is a great food truck (https://awfcc.com/) across the road in the Marina Parking lot. We will have a canopy where you can bring your food and sit down. Bring your own folding chair.

We hope to get as many different hams on the air as possible. To make this work we will be using our own call signs so there won't be the problem of working duplicate stations. We will have volunteer control operators so that hams with Technician Class Licenses will be able to get on the HF bands, too.

An anonymous donor has provided a nice door prize that we will give away. The prize is a FT-8900R quad band radio. This new, still in the box, radio will work UHF, VHF,  6 and 10 meters. https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/ysu-ft-8900r

Come up to the Blaine ACS van and put your call sign on two tickets to get into the drawing. They are free! And if you get on the air and make two or more contacts, you can add two more tickets to the fish bowl. That's four chances to win! We will draw the winning ticket live during next week's Digital Group Zoom Meeting. The only restriction is that you must be a licensed ham to win the radio. All four of those bands are Technician Class legal.

We hope to see you there!

        Hi all,

That was a good meeting for a first of the season.  And here is the recording.  Thank you, thank you Mr. Honaker for the insight on the Military's Secret HAARP Facility.  Absolutely great!

   Remember, we've got Seafeast in Bellingham and the Salmon Run in Blaine this weekend.  You can review the details of them or the details of anything that was offered for sale in the recording.  The items from Ron Eckton W7RE were in a email from Don Boyer W7AIN and described as follows;

The three items include:

1). A Yaesu FT-857 transceiver.  HF, 2 meters and 440 Mhz.  Includes mobile mounts, DC power cord $500.00   Used very little.  Works great.

2). HiQ screwdriver type antenna.  Cost around $600.00 new and is selling it for $350.00 Also, used very little and is in perfect condition.

3). Ford F250 Super Cab long bed truck.  XLT 2006 model with less than 25K actual miles.  6.0 liter diesel engine.  In very good condition.  Price is $22,500.00

Ron lives in Maple Falls.  He does a Costco run every Thursday.  So if anyone is interested in any of the above or knows someone that may be interested, please contact Ron directly.  His contact info is:  w7remf@...  phone is (360) 599-1131.  I do not have any more details.  Thanks for giving the above some thought.

If you missed last nights meeting or if you want to see it again.  Then here are links to the recording.  You can download it in a folder or in a .zip file, your choice.  They are both the same.

   Here are the recordings.  First is the folder of combined files;

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tr4e0yz9sivplqd/AACKVNtHG-Th7QhqtDeypEeNa?dl=0

   Then the .zip;

Oh sweet! I might try to make it to the salmon run! My work schedule changed and I am open Friday morning to Sunday night!

I'm going to try to make the meeting tonight, you might have to put up with me driving to work but I really want to hear about the salmon run contest!

     Hi all,

Here's my version of the invitation.  The club web site calendar reminder of the meeting will be out soon also.

It's the second week of the month.  This is inviting you to the MBARC September 13, 2022 07:00 PM General meeting on Zoom.   (see below)   This is our first meeting after the summer break.

So, continuing with Zoom.  We have the usual reports.  And we will up-date you on other ACS groups in the county.

We have Mr. Scott Honaker, N7SS back for a presentation on the Military's Secret HAARP Facility.  Don't ask, it's a secret.

Coming up next weekend is the Salmon Run,  http://salmonrun.wwdxc.org/   We plan to join WECG out at the Blaine Marine Park for the event.  I hope to have more info at the meeting.  But, so far, we have preliminary plans for lots of food with Salmon, and prizes to go with the radio activation.  A good chance to get away from the Zoom get together's and do a real get together.

We can also go around the Zoom and see if anybody has something they feel needs to be addressed.

There was still some repeater work to do.  Now mainly, King Mt.  Thanks to our Equipment Custodian and those who helped, we have the UHF working on Constitution.

Nothing really new with the web site, but it is filling up.

I hope to try to answer more help questions from new hams, and anyone else.

Testing.  And we still need someone to be the lead organizer.

The usual "For Sale" virtual table.  Get anything you have, ready to show.  I usually start this early in the meeting so there's time to think.

I'll also ask if anyone has something they need.

Again, I think most of the meeting will be a chance to see everybody again, and get caught up on any news.

Here is the invitation to the meeting,  I hope to see you there.  It's the same ID and Passcode again.  The ID and Passcode will be a permanent one (I think).  So, save this for next time also.  It will be recorded, and I'll send a link for downloading it later.

You will be on mute when you first join the meeting.  In the bottom left corner of the Zoom window is the on/off buttons for the microphone and video.  Click the video on, and the mic. when you are ready to say something.

8-year-old girl chats with ISS astronaut using ham radio - CNN

Joseph Trimble WB7PKY

Good day friends and colleagues. I read this lovely news article this morning and had to pass it along to you. I can still vividly remember our three daughters sitting on my lap long ago as I worked hf. They all know my call sign. And every year at Christmas time we would chat with Santa in North Pole, Alaska; yes, there are hams there.

I’m certain some of you have similar memories.

How To Deal With an Overtalker (or Escape From One) | Well+Good

Joseph Trimble WB7PKY

Good day to you. I read the link below with great interest in part because my very early teenage Boy Scout CB radio experiences moved me to amateur radio. I had no idea CB was making a comeback given the availability of GMRS and FRS services.

I trust you will find the article of interest.

Be careful buying RPi-4 adapter cables. If you are using the Geekworm heat sink, you will see that the micro-HDMI socket is recessed and fat plugs will not insert deep enough to make proper contact. For example, this cable has a skinny micro-HDMI plug and it works perfectly:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K21HSQX

This one has a fat plug and will not work with the Geekworm heat sink:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088NDD4PY

Oh, and the plastic around the connector is as hard as a rock and cannot be [safely] carved.

For an Rpi-3 this adapter cable works.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081CG9N1M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For an Rpi-4 you have to add the hdmi to mini hdmi adapter:

I have 3 monitors I'm giving away if anyone's interested. If not I'll donate them to Value Village.
They work fine but they don't have HDMI outlets, DVI only.
Two are 20"diagonal with slightly different dimensions: 10" x 17.5"  & 10.75" x 17"
The 3rd one is small: ~15" diagonal  9" x 12"
Send me an email if you want one. Otherwise I'll give them away first part of next week.

That's fine, I'll post a last call before I give them away.

Ash, you might want to take David up on one of these monitors even if it isn't 12v.  As Steve said an inexpensive adapter would at least give you a monitor that you could use when you are using the your pi at home.
