The Coolest Radio You've Probably Never Heard Of
Good day all. I must admit I was unaware of software defined receivers and their counterparts, software defined transceivers. The link below was sent to me by one of my nephews and it certainly piqued my interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4x7cGALaC8. I apologize to those of you who are aware of SDR and SDT and use it often as I may have cluttered up your Inbox. Steve Stroh N8GNJ helped me out on learning more about the units as he is quite knowledgeable about them. 73 --Joseph

(Invitation) MBARC March Zoom Meeting
Hi all, You've seen the web site calendar reminder of the meeting. Here is my old invitation version. It's the second week of the month. This is inviting you to the MBARC March 8, 2022 07:00 PM General meeting on Zoom. (see below) We hope to make this another good general get together type of meeting. So, continuing with Zoom. We have the usual reports. And we will up-date you on other ACS groups in the county. We can also go around the Zoom and see if anybody has something they feel needs to be addressed. There was several subjects that came up in the last few weeks. And we're getting closer to summer. Maybe we can get some updates about classes, testing. There was still some repeater work to do. Mainly, Constitution UHF. I hope to try to answer more help questions from new hams, and anyone else. I'd like to remind everyone the our yearly dues are up for renewal. If you haven't got it in yet, there's still time. Testing. We need someone to be the lead organizer. The usual "For Sale" virtual table. Get anything you have, ready to show. I usually start this early in the meeting so there's time to think. The list of old equipment from last summer is still available, and I have it. I'm also going to start asking if anyone has something they need. Again, I think most of the meeting will be a chance to see everybody again, and get caught up on any news. I am proposing that DXpeditions begin exchanging 2-character Maidenhead Fields instead of signal reports, which are usually given in stereotyped form and don't enhance communication. See
https://www.mapability.com/ei8ic/maps/gridworld.php.
There is a relevant Wikipedia article about the Maidenhead System: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Locator_System. For example, our Maidenhead
Field is CN, which is bounded by N 40°, W 120°, N 50°, and W 140°.
That includes western British Columbia north to N 50°,
western Washington, western Oregon and northern California as far east as the Nevada border, which coincides with the W 120°
meridian. CN also extends into the Pacific Ocean as far west as W 140°.
Planet Earth includes 324 Maidenhead Fields. For operators with beam antennas, it would be most helpful to be able to use pairs of Maidenhead Fields to orient their beams appropriately. Is there anyone who could devise a computer program to determine the
correct beam-heading, presumably from the midpoint of one Field to the midpoint of any other Field?
Once Maidenhead Fields become common for DXing and contesting, such a program could become quite popular. Please let me know if you are interested.

Bruce Prior N7RR

(last call) MBARC Membership Survey for meeting presentations
Steve Stroh N8GNJ
MBARC Members:
Update: Voting will close no later than 23:59 on Thursday 2022-03-02. The MBARC Board would like to survey the MBARC membership about potential presentations at future MBARC General Meetings. The assumption, of the moment, is that for the immediate future, MBARC won't be able to meet in person as government, etc. facilities (such as the Ferndale Library) will be closed, or if not closed, capacity limited to such low numbers to make meeting there infeasible. Thus we will continue to meet via videoconference. We have put together a survey to find out what the interests are of MBARC members. The topics listed are a subset of the many, many presentation topics available via the ARRL Western Washington Section Speaker's Bureau. Please take the survey. It's semi-anonymous as we won't know your name / callsign unless you tell us. However "Google knows", thus we cannot promise total complete anonymity. This survey (Google Forms) is being done from my personal Google account, on behalf of the MBARC Board. FW: The ARRL Letter for February 24, 2022/Ukraine and Hams
Good day again. On Tuesday I asked if anyone knew someone who recently contacted hams in the Ukraine. The article in the ARRL newsletter titled, Amateur Radio in Ukraine Ordered Off the Air in State of Emergency, tells the story and provides an answer to my query. But we know that the radio bans that exist in the Ukraine and elsewhere can lead to “fugitive” contacts. And that’s another story!! 73 --Joseph

Someone might wish to correct the RepeaterBook listing? (Or maybe I am just reading it wrong?) I had the laugh at your “dust” diagnosis, but it might have been an “unwetted connectionl”? I will use it “gently”. Tom VA7TQB
